At our practice we not only work with each patient individually to make sure that they are benefiting from their individualized treatment program, but we also help educate patients regarding how their body works and how their injury can best be helped. Each patient will be evaluated for deficits in core strength which can make knees, hips, and ankles more vulnerable to injury during daily activities or sports. We also check your joints to see if they have any motion restrictions which can keep you from making a full recovery. We often provide patients with general stretching programs to help relieve tightness in joints and muscles that can lead to problems with the back, hips, knees, or feet. Whatever condition you come to us with, we will want to do a full evaluation so that your overall functioning will become optimal — in fact, this is what sets us apart from other therapy centers. Running Advice From Star Physical Therapy

In an article published by van der Warp et al in February 2015:

http://www.plosone.org/article/fetchObject.action?uri=info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0114937&representation=PDF

Overuse running related injuries most commonly occur at the knee; followed by injuries of the foot, lower leg and ankle.  Injuries to the ligaments, tendons and cartilage are most at risk due to mechanical load and adaptation rates. The present study aimed to identify risk factors predisposed men and women to certain running related injuries.

As cited in two Dutch review articles, an investigation into risk factors of novice runners show that young age and lack of experience are high risk factors in men and lack of experience and early participation in sports such as swimming and cycling were risk factors for women.

In conclusion, sex does not predetermine injury, however, higher BMI leant to low back injuries in women and foot injuries in men. Risk factors such as navicular drop, history of previous injury, varying foot alignment, varying intensity training, surface and distance all contribute to running related injuries.

According to Runner’s World to prevent injuries:

http://www.runnersworld.com/health/the-10-laws-of-injury-prevention

  • Know your limits and progress by the 10% Rule, but listen to your body for signs of overtraining, maybe increase distance by 3-5%.
  • Adapt a hard-day/easy-day approach, or more likely a hard/easy/easy pattern to allow for muscle recovery.
  • Keep a training log detailing aches, fatigue, miles and if there is a correlation.
  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Keep a food plan.
  • Shorten your stride to conserve energy.
  • Train to tone, not bulk up.
  • I.C.E. to decrease inflammation.
  • Run on a level surface to avoid muscle shortening which may cause a functional leg length discrepancy.
  • Vary the running surface and start softer like a bike path or track.
  • Don’t use race pace or speed work too often during the training process
  • Stretch Stretch Stretch – your back and legs
  • Cross train to liven up your muscles to adapt to new stimulus
  • Finally….. get shoes that fit properly allowing your feet to breathe and deform properly.
